Fresh Del Monte is one of the first vertically integrated producers of fruits, vegetables and prepared food to have its emission targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative.

Aligned with the goals set forth by the Paris agreement, the company will be lowering scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions in its operations by 27.5%. For the value chain side, which includes purchased goods, waste generation and distribution, scope 3 emissions must be down by 12.3%. These will contribute to keeping global warming below 2 degrees Celsius.

This isn’t the first time that the company has contributed to sustainability. With targets based on climate science, in 2019, they have allocated 65% of capital expenditure to benefit climate action. Fresh Del Monte has also created a tool and system to track emissions, water and waste levels in its facilities across the globe, ensuring that they are strictly following their campaign.

“We’re thrilled to receive approval of our emissions reduction targets by the Science Based Targets initiative, which furthers our commitment to protect the health of our planet today and for future generations,” said Hans Sauter, Chief Sustainability Officer and SVP of Research & Development at Fresh Del Monte. “The food system is a vital area for climate action and we hope to lead by example and inspire others in the industry to make the commitment toward this much needed change.”
